Application

Most aviation grease specifications require that the grease be evaluated by the following tests:

●   Dropping point test

●   25°C (77°F) Cone Penetration (Unworked/Worked) Test

●   22-hour evaporation loss test (different temperatures under different specifications)

●   100°C (212°F) copper corrosion test

●   Water resistance test at 40°C (104°F)

●   Anti-friction bearing performance test (different temperatures under different specifications)

●   Average Hertz Load

●   30-hour oil separation test (temperature varies under different specifications)

●   Pressure drop (oxygen bomb method) test (temperature varies under different specifications)

In addition, most aviation grease specifications require additional testing specific to the grease type or intended application.

Grease Selection

When selecting a grease for a specific application, the following factors should be considered:

01   Lubrication Requirements

-Friction Requirements

-Wear Control

-Cone Penetration

-Cooling (Heat Dissipation)

-Sealing

-Corrosion Resistance

02   Engineering Components

-Component Type

-Contact Properties (rolling, sliding, etc.)

-Load, Speed and Size

-Metallurgy/chemistry of Components

-Geometric/spatial Constraints

03   Environmental Factors

-Temperature

-Atmospheric Conditions (Humidity, Impurities/dust Contamination)

-Penetration of Water or Other Liquids

-Sealing Material

-Health and Safety

04   Durability and Application

-Application Methods

- Relubrication Intervals

- Expected Life of the Lubricant

- Expected Life Under Abnormal Conditions

- Expected Life of the Component

- Need for Protection Against Unexpected Events

- Performance and Cost
