Main requirements for aircraft hydraulic oil
Low freezing point
Minimal viscosity change with temperature
Good corrosion and oxidation stability
Good seal compatibility
Shear stability
Ultra clean
Flame retardant
Good anti-foaming properties
Good low and/or high temperature stability
In addition, most aviation hydraulic fluid specifications have additional requirements specific to the fluid type or application.
Hydraulic oil cleanliness--super clean characteristics
Hydraulic fluid users strive to ensure optimal performance of hydraulic equipment and extend the life of the equipment. One way to achieve this is to reduce wear on hydraulic system components. Wear can be caused by a variety of factors, the most common of which is particulate matter in the hydraulic fluid.
The latest versions of MIL-PRF-5606, MIL-PRF-6083, MIL-PRF-46170, MIL-PRF-83282, and MIL-PRF-8725 require hydraulic fluids to be “ultra-clean.” Ultra-clean means that particulate matter in the hydraulic fluid is strictly controlled. Over the years, hydraulic systems and components have become smaller, while operating pressures have increased. As a result, particulate matter in the hydraulic fluid is more likely to cause valve sticking, impact corrosion, wear, nozzle and pipe clogging, leading to system failure. Therefore, these specifications have very strict limits on particulate matter.
The requirements for MIL-PRF-5606J and MIL-PRF-83282D are generally as follows:
AeroShell Fluid 41 is a mineral hydraulic fluid with ultra-clean properties and is a grade with a wider range of applications
AeroShell Fluid 31 is a synthetic hydrocarbon flame-retardant hydraulic fluid that is gradually replacing mineral hydraulic fluids
AeroShell Fluid 51 is a low temperature synthetic hydrocarbon flame retardant hydraulic fluid
AeroShell Fluid 61 is a corrosion-resistant synthetic hydrocarbon flame-retardant hydraulic fluid
AeroShell LGF is a hydraulic fluid specifically designed for use in shock struts on certain aircraft landing gear
